What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian body of knowledge concerned with the design, orientation and layout of built spaces. Developed over centuries, it draws on observations about how sunlight, wind, direction and spatial organisation affect the people who live and work within a structure.

At its core, Vastu treats a building as a living system — one where the placement of rooms, entrances and functions influences comfort, efficiency and wellbeing, much like how modern architecture considers daylighting, ventilation and circulation.

Rather than a fixed rulebook, Vastu is best understood as a framework of principles that can be adapted to different climates, plot shapes and building types. A qualified consultant applies these principles alongside — not instead of — sound structural and architectural practice.

Contemporary Vastu consultancy, including our own approach, treats the discipline as a complement to modern architecture: informed by tradition, but grounded in observable outcomes and practical implementation.
