Understanding the Five Elements

Vastu's five elements — Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space — form a framework for thinking about balance within a built environment, echoing the classical Panchabhuta concept found across Indian philosophy.

Earth relates to stability and grounding, often associated with the south-west; Water relates to flow and renewal, associated with the north-east; Fire relates to energy and transformation, associated with the south-east.

Air relates to movement and circulation, associated with the north-west; Space relates to openness and connection, and is typically considered at the centre of a home — the zone traditionally left the least cluttered.

In practice, 'balancing' the elements means avoiding extremes — ensuring no single zone is overloaded with a conflicting function — rather than a literal or mystical exercise.
