The Vastu Purusha Mandala is a geometric diagram — typically a grid of squares — used to map a site or building into zones, each associated with a direction and a set of qualities. It functions less as a mystical symbol and more as a planning tool.
Historically, the mandala divides a plot into a grid, most commonly 8x8 or 9x9 squares, with each zone carrying guidance about which functions are best suited to it — for example, service areas toward the south-east and open, light-filled zones toward the north-east.
In modern practice, the mandala is used diagnostically: overlaying it onto an existing floor plan or a proposed design reveals which functions sit in which zones, making it easier to spot misalignments and plan corrections.
We use a simplified, clean rendering of the mandala in our reports — geometric and legible, rather than ornamental — so clients can see exactly how their space maps against traditional zoning.
